M71 Slide Rules Their History By Peter Hopp 1999, 8.5 x 11, Softbound, 310 pgs Featuring: Mostly European. This is the first book that the ISRM curator reaches for when looking for historical references on artifacts. A must have for the collector. Monumental in its scope and the wealth of detail it provides, this book is an invaluable reference on slide rules, their makers, manufacturers, and retailers. Covering the period from the instrument's invention in the early 17th century to the present day, this comprehensive treatise illuminates all aspects of slide rule design and production. The author includes a staggering amount of information, all cross-referenced, on slide rule models and their makers and manufacturers. In all, several thousand slide rule descriptions are catalogued. The book also includes: a history of the slide rule and the evolution of standard designs, biographies of some of the influential figures in slide rule design; approximately 500 world-wide patents, catalogued by year for dating purposes; descriptions of scales and gauge marks; a section on the care and restoration of slide rules; a glossary of terms used; 8 appendices and 18 tables of correlated information; a comprehensive bibliography. |

REF Joint Slide Rules By Peter Hopp 2009, 8.5 x 11, Softbound, 202 pgs For hundreds of years, the slide rule has been a useful calculating device. In his second book, Joint Slide Rules: Sectors, 2-foot 2-fold and similar slide rules, expert Peter M. Hopp examines the joint rule, completing an important but neglected part of slide rule history. The book is a comprehensive account of joint rules and contains detailed information on over two hundred joint slide rule makers from around the world. Calculating devices that preceded the slide rule, such as sectors and timber rules, are examined, as are special joint rules that incorporate additional elements, such as callipers. Special jointed devices, such as dip rods that allow calculation, are also included. With the addition of over one hundred detailed illustrations of joint slide rules and a glossary of terms, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in joint slide rules and their history. |

REF Slide Rules: A Journey Through Three Centuries >By Dieter Von Jezierski Originally published in German in 1977 as the first major book on the history of the slide rule since Florian Cajori's A History of the Logarithmic Slide Rule, this newly revised and translated edition of Slide Rules, A Journey Through Three Centuries, offers readers a fresh, more Continental perspective on this most fascinating of calculating instruments. The book is an important piece of historical and technological research, in which the author includes the history of the slide rule from its beginnings in the 17th century, through its gradual adoption and development worldwide during the 19th and 20th centuries, to its sudden and almost complete demise in the mid-1970s. He also covers the evolution of various slide rule components, technologies, and manufacturing processes, as well as histories of the major slide rule manufacturers and their product lines during the last 100 years. There are detailed references to original sources throughout, which the reader may use as a springboard to further study and research. Readable and very informative, this is a book that, together with those of Cajori and Peter Hopp, any slide rule collector or historian of technology will find of great interest and real benefit. |

REF A Treatise of Mathematical Instruments By John Robertson, David Manthey A reprint of A Treatise of Mathematical Instruments - 1856 by J.F. Heather contains a complete description of a range of tools that are useful in mathematics, surveying, architecture, navigation, drafting, gunnery, physics, and illustration. It covers the sector (a form of calculator that predates the slide rule), the gunner's calipers, the proportional compasses, and a variety of lesser instruments. Examples show how to use all of the instruments, with extensive details on architectural drawing, plane geoemtry, spherical trigonometry, unit conversion, surveying, perspective drawing, and ship's guns (cannons and mortars). 12 plates of figures illustrate and clarify the text. This is a good book, well produced, but remember that it is a reporing of a book from 1856, the cover is a lot more recent. It is a fac-simile of the original edition, which can be awkward to read with its strange letters "s" and antiquated terminology. A free download of the original book is available above in the ISRM library. |

REF Calculating On Slide Rule and Disc By I. J. Schuitema, H. van Herwijnen Author IJzebrand Schuitema owns one of the largest slide rule collections in the world. In the course of his collecting, he came upon rules that were unknown to him and that excited his curiosity. This book is a compilation of the articles he wrote about these wonderful slide rules, each one made for a specific and unique use, and about the men who designed and manufactured them. There is the slide rule that computes road curvature, one that calculates for sewerage applications, one that provides navigational information for flyers, one for brewers that computes barley malt, water, hops, and yeast and then takes into account time, temperature and pressure and there are many, many more. Ir. Schuitema was fortunate to have as his associate in this enterprise Herman van Herwijnen, who describes himself as a slide rule collector and computer freak. He has compiled a marvelous CD, designed for the PC and included with the book, featuring an enormous number of photographs (in full color and from all sides and angles) of all the rules mentioned in the book, as well as a great many additional ones. Each rule is accompanied by a description material it is made of, size, name, etc. Each picture can be enlarged several times, so that every detail is seen. The disc can be searched, browsed, its index can be used to take the reader to a particular slide rule maker or to a particular slide rule, and individual pictures can be printed or copied. 208 pages. 7 x 10. Profusely illustrated. Soft cover. |

REF The Slide Rule, Simplified, Explained, and Illustrated for the Mechanical Trades By Robert Riddell Once more, Astragal Press has rescued an old and rare book from obscurity, allowing for the broad circulation of information previously limited to the select few who could afford access. This book, first published in 1881, was written about the use of the first standard slide rule made in the United States: a Mannheim-type slide rule made by Stephens Co., a mjor rule manufacturer. Included in Riddell's book, aimed primarily at carpenters and joiners, is a wealth of fascinating instruction on the use of the slide rule in everything from making the calculations necessary for constructing circular porches and spiral stairways, to calculating wages owed or the cost of hauling lumber. Included, as well, are lovely plates illustrating various geometric and trigonometric calculations used in construction. As a source book, it should be of great interest and value to tool collectors, slide rule |

REF The Slide Rule Paperback, A Practical manual - Reprinted - September 15, 2018. From the Introduction. The slide rule may be defined as an instrument for mechanically effecting calculations by logarithms. Those familiar with logarithms and their use will recognize that the slide rule provides what is in effect a concisely arranged table of logarithms, together with a simple and convenient means for adding and subtracting any selected values. Those, however, who have no acquaintance with logarithms will find that only an elementary knowledge of the subject is necessary to enable them to make full use of the slide rule. It is true that for simple slide-rule operations, as multiplication and division, a knowledge of logarithms is unnecessary.
