ECOBRA or Ecobra was a brand name of Bayerische Reisszeugfabrik, a Nuremberg maker of drawing instruments that was purchased by Joseph Dietzgen in 1909. The company began producing slide rules before World War II, and after the war, Eugene Dietzgen Company of Chicago distributed ECOBRA rules in the United States. Metal rules were more popular in the United States than they were in Europe. Reference: Dieter von Jezierski, Slide Rules: A Journey Through Three Centuries trans. Little is known about this brand. There was a Friedman Bros of New York, which made (or distributed) Drafting tools (ca1935), marked "Freidman Germany" but it is not confirmed if this is the same family, The slide rule and cursor design is similar to Faber-Castell who rebranded slide rules. According to J¨ergen Nestler in Germany, Friedmann was a representitive and distributor for Faber-Castell. |

H-H was founded by A.A. Höhler (the first "H") in 1945 as Präzisionswerk Hohen Neuendorf A.A. Höhler, Hohen Neuendorf bei Berlin, Annemariestraße 27. Hohen Neuendorf (the second "H") is a town in the Oberhavel district, in Brandenburg, Germany. It is located north west of Berlin. The "Chronicle of the Municipality of Hohen Neuendorf from the Beginnings to 1995" has a record stating the A.A. Höhler produced slide rules with two workers. Prior to 1945 the records also show other workshops, potential forerunners of H-H, as Schlecht & Roth, Mechanical Workshop, Oranienburger Str. 74; Ewald Schlecht 1944, parts for slide rules, jigs and lighters; and Ewald Schlecht 1945, 3000 slide rules produced, 3 employees. Höhler may have worked for, or ended up taking over these other enterprises. Product ceased by the end of the 1950s.Only the Rietz design seems to exist. See expanded H-H Universum history by George Schriber (translated from German by Andreas Faßbender). |

IWA RECHENSHIEBERFABRIK, F.Riehle KG, 73 Esslingen a.N. - Kuferstr. 13, West Germany, is most famous for its slide charts and circular calculators. These in this gallery more resemble generic slide rules with log scales. From the beginning IWA was specialized in the development and design of data slide as well as their manufacturing. Approximately 10% were designed by their customers. The reamaining 90% were developed as exclusive IWA mdels or designed against the technicall specifications of the customers. |
IWA Company and Manufacturing Prosseses Information (English and German) From 1924-1962 the scales on cardboard data slides were designed manually with ink on paper. Typographic printing was used. Texts and numbers were manually composed with lead letters, and then pressed into a zinch cliche. After 1962, all cardboard data slides were offset printed. From 1924-1930 the plastic slides were lithograph printed. From 1930-1960 lithograph printing was used.In 1960 screenprint in combination with offset was used and the surface of the plastic reinforced by varnishing and/or laminating. |

The timeline in terms of the company name and its change and change back is a bit more difficult.
KHH was founded on December 16, 1909 by William Albert Klaus Diederich Koch, John Carl Rudolf Huxhold, and Carl Fritz Emil Hannemann.
Some texts say they were former employees of Dennert & Pape.
William Koch died in mid 1930 and shares in the company went to his son Wilhelm Arnold Chrisitan Koch, but he did not stay with the firm past 1943.
The firm applied to register "Huxhold & Hannemann, Hansestadt Hamburg" as the new name, but the factory was totally destroyed in the war before
it was used on any products. The factory ws set on fire and completely obliterated during an air raid on Hamburg
by the Royal Air Force on July 21, 1942. John Huxhold died at the age of 66 just before the air raid and so was saved from having to see his factory bombed.
The official end of KHH is documented with the deletion from the commercial register on August 30, 1944
George Schreiber writes in his book that suspects that not only was the name change entered late in the commercial register, but that the familiar old
company name will also continue to be used on the slide rules for the time being. Slide rules which bears the name KHH are rare,
those with "Huxhold & Hannemann Hamburg" even rarer.Taken from the book of George Schreiber:. |

E. O. Richter (c1841-1907) founded the firm in Chemnitz, Saxony, after training as a clockmaker.
In 1892 he patented his 'flat system', copied by many other makers after his patent ran out in
1905. Firm became a VEB Kombinat (i.e. a state owned company) in 1945. Richter instruments
continued to be made in the DDR until the 1980s at least. (text by David Riches, UK) |

In 1826 Heinrich Wilhelm Conrad Schacht received a lottery ticket from his boss, which gave him a considerable cash gain. He was able to open his first paper shop at the age of 24: "Conrad Schacht". In only nine years, Schacht succeeded in establishing a successful business and building its own paper manufacturing. In 1835, Schacht died after a short illness and Conrad Schacht's widow quickly decided to hand over the business to a friend of the family, Adolph Westerich and on 1 July 1835 took over the management. In 1842, a large fire destroyed many Hamburg buildings, including the paper treatment Schacht. Three years later, in May 1845, Westerich again opened the doors of the action, but with a new address and from 1846 also under a new name: "Schacht & Westerich". When Adolph Westerich retired in 1870, he left his nephew Eduard a solid and popular Hamburg company. It was only in 1995 that Manfred Westerich, the last managing director of the Westerich family, left the company. |

Schacht & Westerich System Cuntz (Complex Number) Slide Rule Made in Germany by Schacht & Westerich of Hamburg Front Scale: L, 0.1t, 0.1s, 0.01st, d²π/4, nπ, ∛(H1HT2), ∛(Z1ZT2), ∛(E1T2M3), d√(Z1T2HT3), d√(E1H2ZT3) [ Q+1 ] n23, 1:n Back: 15 cm., 6 in. Slide Back: blank Note: In 1916, Cuntz patented the ST, S and T scales, all refering to D. This is today's standard. He also developed 1-unit 20 inch Square Root and 30-inch Cube Root scales, both refering to D. (used on today's Pickett DUAL-BASE Rules). Scans provided Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, Australia and the Steve Searle Collection, Tennessee This slide rule has extra scales which can be used for many different forms of calculations. It was designed and patented (in 1916) by one Gregor Rudolf Ferdinand Heinrich Cuntz of Hamburg, Germany. The primary intention of this slide rule arrangement seems to be to keep the orders of magnitude of numbers, ie, the position of the decimal point, as easily ascertainable as possible. The arrangement also allows for all the various roots, circular and trigonometric numbers to be available in one view along the cursor hairline. Refs: [G.R.F.H.
