United Kingdom British Slide Rules

England was the home of John Napier (1550-1617), Edmund Gunter (1581-1626), William Oughtred (1575-1660), and many others, giving the British the credit for kicking off the development of the wide use of slide rules and calculators based on logarithims. This gallery shows British based manufacturers and distributors in the United Kingdom that do not have their own gallery. More British slide rules may be found in: Blundell-Harling (BRL);Pocket Watches; Rarities; PIC/Thornton; Unique. Note that Jakar Slide Rules made by Fuji intended for the British market are shown in the MiscJapan Gallery.

Albert John Anido (ca1890)

Albert John & Ernestine Regina Anido (ca1900)

Known history: Albert John Anido was Born in Montevideo, Uruguay (1883). He had a sister, Ernestine Regina Anido (1879-1948) and brother William Nicholas Anido (1881-1914). Mentioned as an elected student in the Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, Volume 40 (1907-1908) page 411. Graduated B.SC.(Eng) at the University of London in 1909. Married to Nellie Helen Blanch Forsdyke. They had a son, John David Forsdyke Anido (1916-2001). The 1914-1919 Jerseymen roll of service includes an Albert John Anido of military age who fought in the First World War and the 21 March 1916 London Gazette lists the London Electrical Engineers: Corporal Albert John Anido to be Second Lieutenant (on probation) working with the anti-aircraft corps. A later record in the London Times shows an Albert John Anido (sn 73845) as being a pilot in training in 1941, but he would have been 58 by then, so this must be some other relation. The 1939 London Gazette shows that he died atFlat 6, Eaton Hall, 15, Eaton Gardens, Hove, Sussex, 22nd January, 1949 and his last profesion as being an Engineering Tutor. Besides his slide rule patent, Albert Anido obtained GB 260,497 Indicating ringing of bells to operators in 1926.

Dargue Brothers. Ltd. "SIMPLON", Halifax, England

Often mistaken as a maker, SIMPLON was just the company's brand name. This rectilinear range was only produced from 1931 to 1939. The models stand out for their unusual dirty orange/butterscotch colour and on some, an odd multilayered and screwed together construction. Despite the exotic "Sub-Ivory" name they were made from an early form of plastic and the scales were incised/imprinted. The colour suggests the use of Catalin a thermosetting polymer developed by the US Catalin Corporation in 1927. It took years before other makers finally followed Dargue's innovative "UNIFACE" scale layout and realised it was much more convenient for solving general arithmetic-based problems to have trigonometric scales on the front face of the stock. English Electric Co. Ltd, Strand. London, England 1918-1959

In 1918 the English Electric Company Limited (EE) was a British industrial manufacturer formed after the armistice of World War I by amalgamating five businesses which, during the war, had been making munitions, armaments and aeroplanes. It initially specialised in industrial electric motors and transformers, railway locomotives and traction equipment, diesel motors and steam turbines. Its activities were later expanded to include consumer electronics, nuclear reactors, guided missiles, military aircraft and mainframe computers. In 1959 the company became English Electric Aviation Ltd. Two English Electric aircraft designs became landmarks in British aeronautical engineering; the Canberra or B-57, and the Lightning. In 1960, English Electric Aircraft (40%) merged with Vickers (40%) and Bristol (20%) to form British Aircraft Corporation. Ref: Wikipedia

W.F. Stanley & Company - Holborn, London, England

W. F. Stanley and Company, manufacturers of mathematical, drafting and scientific instruments, was founded in 1854 by William Ford Robinson Stanley (1829-1909); it became a limited company (corporation) in 1900. In 1861 Stanley invented a prize-winning straight-line dividing machine that was used to make accurate scales for slide rules and other mathematical instruments. Among the slide rules manufactured and distributed by the Stanley company were the C.T. Cooper slide rule and the Fuller spiral slide rule, designed by George Fuller in 1878.

Taylor Instruments / TYCOS / Short & Mason, London

George Taylor and David Kendall began making thermometers in 1851. By 1853 George was on his own and in 1872 he formed Taylor Brothers with his brother Frank. They morphed into Taylor Instrument Company in 1907 and began using the trade name Tycos in 1908. The Tycos name was used exclusively until 1932, when the Taylor name was used.

Short & Mason (S&M) was founded in London in 1864 by Thomas Watling Short and William James Mason. They were makers of barometers, anemometers and compasses. Taylor Brothers acquired Short & Mason in 1900 and Taylor marketed their made-in-England products in the USA. In 1969 Short & Mason was merged into Taylor Instruments, which was then a subsidiary of Sybron Corporation. Short & Mason must have designed the Hygrorule as the S&M name was on all the slide rules up through the 1972 Taylor catalog.
