Logar

Note that the label MSZ4617-57 is a standard like the USSR GOST system, not a model number. It appears on both 27cm and 13cm pocket Hungarian Logar models.

The 'Losztályu' found in the well of Logar slide rules means: 'First class'. 'Logar' is a brand name. Grammatically it is the first letters of 'Logarléc' which means Slide Rule. (In Hungarian it is a compound word: logar-léc, means logarithmic or algorithmic ) In Hungary, on the eastern side of the Iron Curtain we used to invent new brand names for two reasons, First, so it would sound better in the West. If a product was developed and intended to be sold to Western markets, it received a new name. Second: during Socialism, we did not have many competing factories or brands. Only one or two companies in the governments hands. The slide rules were manufactured by Gamma Mũvek Works in Hungary. The Hungarian Socialist Party had a policy of forcing a manufacturer to provide multiple names to a product, so the Hungarian people could think they were choosing from not one, but two brands. In this case, Gamma AND Logar slide rules, even though they are basically the same manufacturer. (in the USA we re-branded Hemmi and Ricoh slide rules also).

Founded before WWII, the Logarex company was a factory for fabricating drawing instruments. From 1948 to 1950 Logarex belonged to L&C Hardtmuth, which made the Koh-I-Noor brand pencils. After becoming a state run business as part of the Soviet empire, LOGAREX made slide rules mainly for the Eastern Block.

She graduated with a masters degree in Czechoslovakia. She received a PhD. from the University of Pennsylvania (1975) and later became a Petroleum Engineer for Shell Canada Limited and was a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers. One of her many papers, published in 1996 by the journal 'SPE Reservoir Engineering', was Composition and Phase Changes in Testing and Producing Retrograde Gas Wells and she wrote Spectroscopic and Magnetic Resonance Studies of Aromatic Molecules published by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, University of Pennsylvania, 1975. Currently retired and an active tennis player.

SKALA (SCALE) - Warszawa, Poland

Cooperative SCALE - a company known mainly from the production of accessories and drafting aids. including slide rules, The head office is located in Warsaw, in the district of Wola on Odolanch , ul. Gizów 6th SKALA (or SCALE) was created after World War II in 1950, based on the "St. Szymanski and K. Gypsy" company established in 1929. The company, which dealt with the supply of equipment initially relying on imports, slowly becoming a producer. SKALA is now the only Polish manufacturer of compasses, technical and precise, and also produces small and medium-sized plastic drawing instruments, especially for technical school workshops. The president of the cooperative is Andrew Rowinski, and the company is currently engaged in manufacturing, marketing and services, and has a network of company-owned stores. See www.sp-skala.com.

Several of the SKALA slide rules have "ZAKt.im.dymitrowa Warszawa" or similar markings in the well. "Zaklady im. Dymitrowa" was a name of the manufacturing plant in Warsaw after the WWII. The factory was founded in the early 30s by an electrical engineer and manufactured electrical high-voltage control equipment. The communists nationalized the plant, expelled the owner (a capitalist, the "enemy of the people") and re-named the factory after a Bulgarian communist, George Dimitrov. The name had nothing in common with any manufacturing standards, communists named most of the factories after their heroes.

In 1904, the entrepreneur from Slovenj Gradec JA Siegel started producing wooden scales. In 1927 the company was taken over by Mr. Ivan Mikolic and as a successful entrepreneur greatly expanded the range of wooden products with toys and school supplies.In 1945 after World War II, the Scale Factory expanded its program to include metal and plastic scales. In 1972, Tovarna meril was transformed into a working organization called "Slovenijales Tovarna meril Slovenj Gradec", consisting of four production organizational units (Plastika, Kovine, Les and Kopa) and a joint service unit. In 1979, the organizational units became independent companies (TOZDi), and the production program of school supplies and thermoplastic injection molding was completely taken over by TOZD Tovarna meril Plastika.In 1996, Triso was transformed into a joint stock company. With the gradual loss of Yugoslav markets, the consequences of outdated technology and the lack of a vision and strategies for future operations, Triso dd ceased to operate as a company in 2007. Philip Stanley retired from engineering to become a full-time dealer in and appraiser of antique scientific instruments and tools as The Analytical Engine. He has written two books on antique measuring instruments, and numerous articles on instruments and technology, and has given several talks on these subjects. Phil appeared on the Antiques Road Show on PBS, as an appraiser, in 2012, 2013, 2014.
