| Aristo was a slide rule manufacturer since 1872. Dennert & Pape was founded by
Johann Dennert & Martin Pape, in Hamburg, Germany, and
continued under that name until 1936. D&P were the first to laminate and engrave
celluloid on boxwood wood slide rules in 1886.
Mahogany was used after 1888 and in 1902 started producing
slide rules using the System Rietz scales designed by Max Rietz.
Aristo began using "DUPA" as a trademark from 1924 to 1936. However, in 1925, the brand became better known as "Aristo", which appeared on slide rules along with "D&P". By 1936 "Aristo" became te official trademark on all their plastic slide rules. The plastic slide rules used Astrolon for the stock and Plexiglas for the cursor. The D&P company name officially became Aristo in 1948 when they introduced all-plastic Duplex slide rules
and discontinued mahogany wood models. The first System Darmstadt from D&P was sold in 1939. Aristo stayed in the slide rule business until the end of 1978, a run of 106 years. Aristo was one of the most important slide rule manufacturers world wide.

This German U-Boat Version type HR1 (Höhenrechenschieber) was a simple dual concentric cylinder ,though a progression from the original Bygrave rule invented in England in the 1920s and designed to solve the PZX triangle. The German Navy required ever greater accuracy for position fixing in special circumstances, one of which was covert opperations, the HR1 was developed to a point where a solution with an error of less than ½ a minute of arc or within about 1 ½ minutes could be calculated. Henry Benoit (BSEE 1968, MSc 1970) had a hands-on biomedical engineering career in OB/GYN research at University of Toronto and clinical engineering at University of Ottawa Heart Institute. His graduate work focussed on electroanesthesia and electrosleep. During the 70s he applied an early Fairchild charge-coupled device to observation of internal organs and designed portable instrumentation based on the RCA COSMAC computer chip set and the FORTH language. Later he contributed to excimer laser applications in cardiac ablation surgery and integration of electronic technologies into clinical settings. This slide rule was obtained during college to compliment his Aristo 0970 Multilog.

Donated by Henry (Hank) Benoit, Kingston, Ontario, Canada
Henry Benoit (BSEE 1968, MSc 1970) had a hands-on biomedical engineering career in OB/GYN research at University of Toronto and
clinical engineering at University of Ottawa Heart Institute. His graduate work focussed on electroanesthesia and electrosleep.
During the 70s he applied an early Fairchild charge-coupled device to observation of internal organs and designed portable
instrumentation based on the RCA COSMAC computer chip set and the FORTH language. Later he contributed to excimer laser
applications in cardiac ablation surgery and integration of electronic technologies into clinical settings. This slide rule was
obtained before starting college.

Explanation of Aristo Manufacturing Date Codes| The following explanations are courtesy of Greg Scott adapted
from Greg's Slide Rules Post WWII Aristo rules all have a manufacturing code on one edge of the rule.
This is usually a combination of alpha and numeric codes which defines the
rule's factory of manufacture, year of manufacture and batch number.
Code Details
There are three code segments, The factory, year of manufacture and lot number.
The lot number is self-explanatory.
Examples of date codes:

2FX16 - Manufactured 1969 in lot 16 in Hamburg4FE02 - Manufactured 1968 in lot 02 in Wörgl
 3LS06 - Manufactured 1973 in lot 06 in Geretsried
 WLS32 - Manufactured 1973 in lot 32 in Wörgl

 | Factory codes: 1st character, either alpha or numeric.

	      | H | 2 | Hamburg |
	      | G | 3 | Geretsried |
	      | W | 4 | Wörgl |
Year Code: 2nd & 3rd CharacterUp to about 1959 dates were included in the manufacturing code as a
number after that the alpha codes were used.
