Aristo was a slide rule manufacturer since 1872. Dennert & Pape was founded by Johann Dennert & Martin Pape, in Hamburg, Germany, and continued under that name until 1936. D&P were the first to laminate and engrave celluloid on boxwood wood slide rules in 1886. Mahogany was used after 1888 and in 1902 started producing slide rules using the System Rietz scales designed by Max Rietz. Aristo began using "DUPA" as a trademark from 1924 to 1936. However, in 1925, the brand became better known as "Aristo", which appeared on slide rules along with "D&P". By 1936 "Aristo" became te official trademark on all their plastic slide rules. The plastic slide rules used Astrolon for the stock and Plexiglas for the cursor. The D&P company name officially became Aristo in 1948 when they introduced all-plastic Duplex slide rules and discontinued mahogany wood models. The first System Darmstadt from D&P was sold in 1939. Aristo stayed in the slide rule business until the end of 1978, a run of 106 years. Aristo was one of the most important slide rule manufacturers world wide.

Aristo 109 Rietz (20inch/50cm) 1943

Donald Henry Northcote (1921-2004), Professor of Plant Biochemistry, University of Cambridge, England, and Master of Sidney Sussex College Cambridge, from 1976 to 1992. He used the aove slide rule in his scientific work. Prof. Northcote was a laboratory scientist: a chemist and electron microscopist. His laboratory was in the Department of Biochemistry, Tennis Court Road, Cambridge, England. He has another slide rule in the Blundell gallery. Dennert & Pape System Rietz

Owned by Roman Marian Russek (1933-2011). Roman Russek was known for his wide knowledge of power cables and, in later years, for his expertise the transfer of technology within international joint ventures. During WWII, as a teenager he was forced to work for the German occupation as a translator. By the close of WWII Roman was a member of the Polish Army under British command. With Communism descending on his homeland his left to study in Britain where he earned engineering degrees from Heriot Watt University (Edinburgh) and London University. Continued on right.

Cont'd.: By 1949 he was a Scientific Officer in the Wood Lane Research Laboratories of British Insulated Callenders Cables in London. There he was assigned to teams studying the mechanical behavior of aluminum sheaths, electrical characteristics of oil impregnated paper as well as assisting in the development of flexible joints for submarine cables destined to be used in the HVDC link between North and South Island in New Zealand. As Design Engineer and then Department Manager Roman traveled widely within Canada and internationally representing CWC in many negotiations and discussions with customers and associated firms. He was fluent in five languages. Later as Vice-President Technical Services Roman spent another 14 years transferring technology from the domestic company to the many fledgling associate companies in Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Ireland, Spain, Brazil. South Africa, Nigeria, New Zealand, Australia and Iran. Roman and his wife Shiela spent much of their retirement years traveling around the world.

Notes: This German U-Boat Version type HR1 (Höhenrechenschieber) was a simple dual concentric cylinder ,though a progression from the original Bygrave rule invented in England in the 1920s and designed to solve the PZX triangle. The German Navy required ever greater accuracy for position fixing in special circumstances, one of which was covert opperations, the HR1 was developed to a point where a solution with an error of less than ½ a minute of arc or within about 1 ½ minutes could be calculated. This slide rule was used by his father who purchased it in Germany 1961-1964. He worked as an Electrical Engineer with BPA in Portland, Oregon. BPA and ASEA had a joint venture in providing electrical energy.

Henry Benoit (BSEE 1968, MSc 1970) had a hands-on biomedical engineering career in OB/GYN research at University of Toronto and clinical engineering at University of Ottawa Heart Institute. His graduate work focussed on electroanesthesia and electrosleep. During the 70s he applied an early Fairchild charge-coupled device to observation of internal organs and designed portable instrumentation based on the RCA COSMAC computer chip set and the FORTH language. Later he contributed to excimer laser applications in cardiac ablation surgery and integration of electronic technologies into clinical settings. This slide rule was obtained during college to compliment his Aristo 0970 Multilog.

The Nomination Letter written by Mike Konshak, one of his past racers, who is also the curator of the Slide Rule Museum and also the author of Shell Thuet's Biography. Shell built and tuned winning Indian Scouts, Enfield's and Yamahas. See also his Pickett 800-ES

(Cont'd) Ted received an appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY. He graduated from Kings Point in August of 1965.:Ted served his active duty in the Port of New York.He then enrolled in Fordham University (NY) School of Law and graduated in the class of 1970.Ted also served as Law Clerk to the Hon. John M. Canella of the Southern District of New York. Ted joined the law firm of Cadwalader, Wickersham and Taft as an Admiralty and International lawyer, rising to partner, and remained with that firm for twenty-four years. Ted accepted a position with Popham Haik, a Denver office of the Minneapolis-based firm. Ted's many hobbies included woodworking and ship modeling. He crafted several ship models, called "scratch built". The garnered him an award for that model. Ted met Nancy Allison at a Kings Point social event in late February 1964 and were married on May 30, 1966 at Roslyn, New York. Henry Benoit (BSEE 1968, MSc 1970) had a hands-on biomedical engineering career in OB/GYN research at University of Toronto and clinical engineering at University of Ottawa Heart Institute. His graduate work focussed on electroanesthesia and electrosleep. During the 70s he applied an early Fairchild charge-coupled device to observation of internal organs and designed portable instrumentation based on the RCA COSMAC computer chip set and the FORTH language. Later he contributed to excimer laser applications in cardiac ablation surgery and integration of electronic technologies into clinical settings.This slide rule was obtained before starting college. Explanation of Aristo Manufacturing Date Codes

The following explanations are courtesy of Greg Scott adapted from Greg's Slide Rules

Post WWII Aristo rules all have a manufacturing code on one edge of the rule. This is usually a combination of alpha and numeric codes which defines the rule's factory of manufacture, year of manufacture and batch number.

Code Details There are three code segments, The factory, year of manufacture and lot number. The lot number is self-explanatory.

Examples of date codes:

2FX16 - Manufactured 1969 in lot 16 in Hamburg
4FE02 - Manufactured 1968 in lot 02 in Wörgl
3LS06 - Manufactured 1973 in lot 06 in Geretsried
WLS32 - Manufactured 1973 in lot 32 in Wörgl

Factory codes:
1st character, either alpha or numeric.

Year Code: 2nd & 3rd Character
Up to about 1959 dates were included in the manufacturing code as a number after that the alpha codes were used.
